Northside Girls Basketball League

Northside Girls Basketball League are a non-profit junior girls’ basketball club under the Northside Wizards Basketball Association.

Our objective is to promote, develop and encourage participation in basketball in the Northside of Brisbane.  We train at either Northside Indoor Sports Centre (Zillmere) or The Sports Centre (Boondall). Our competition games are at Northside Indoor Sports Centre (Zillmere) on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Our club is run by volunteers and we encourage parents to help out in various roles to keep the club functioning and keep our girls happy on the court.

Club philosophy

  • Playing basketball should be fun.
  • The enjoyment of playing basketball is in knowing the individuals and team have done their very best.
  • Winning should provide a focus for the team as a whole – the goal should be to win as a team and have fun in the process.
  • Regardless of ability, every member of the team deserves to be treated with encouragement and to be given equal playing time.
  • Success should not be measured in terms of wins and losses but in the amount of effort put in.
  • Playing time for players will be based on each player’s commitment to practice, intensity, attitude and skills.
  • Each coach makes the decision who will start and who plays as they know best the effort put in.
  • We aim for each player is to receive equal court time over the course of the season, but that doesn’t mean that each player receives the same amount of court time every game.
  • All players must be given the opportunity to develop while on the court.

Team rules

  • In order to promote the value of teamwork, all players are required to be at practice.
  • If your child needs to miss a practice, please let your team manager know.
  • If players miss a practice and it is not excused, they may be started on the bench for the next game. Continued absences could lead to being benched for the first quarter.
  • Player court behaviour is monitored at all times by coaches and administration, and if out of line it will be addressed. Swearing and inappropriate gestures will not be allowed any time. If a player gets a technical foul due to their inappropriate behaviour or language during a game, they must be benched straight away. Players involved with this kind of behaviour are to be addressed and given options to correct. NGBL philosophy is that players must behave in a manner of good sportsmanship at all times.

Parent guidelines (from Basketball Queensland Codes of Behaviour)

  • Remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not yours.
  • Encourage children to participate, do not force them.
  • Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than winning or losing.
  • Encourage children always to play according to the rules and to settle disagreements without resorting to hostility or violence.
  • Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  • Remember that children learn best by example. Appreciate good performances and skilful plays by all participants.
  • Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
  • Respect officials’ decisions and teach children to do likewise.
  • Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators. Without them, your child could not participate.
  • Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Refrain from engaging in negative or destructive discussion or postings on social media about players, coaches, spectators, officials, administrators or other basketball participants, that may be viewed as abusive, harassing or offensive in nature.
